Manrico Amlicare Angelini and St. Clair Clement

- The Fencing Masters

Born in Pisa, Italy in 1911, Herr Angelini was an eminent and respected interpreter of the Italian Fencing school.

In the 1930’s Angelini made his residence in the onetime center of fencing, the city of Frankfurt am Main. He instructed in many of Frankfurt’s fencing clubs - after the war he expanded to towns like Aschaffenburg, 1951 to Bad Nauheim, as well as Darmstadt and Mannheim. Noted fencing authority like Maestro Dr. William M. Gaugler also trained with him.
His conduct and preservation of the Italian fencing style was of intense interest to him and he passed this on to St. Clair Clement. His last engagement was with the American Armed Forces, where Clement was able to use his previous training and excel in becoming one of Herr Angelini's finest students.
Manrico Amlicare Angelini, a member of the Academy of German Fencing Masters, died in November 1981.

BRIEF HISTORY OF FENCING

The Alexandre Dumas fencing society is based on the long history of fencing which dates back to the Greeks.

We firmly believe that contributing to the growth and awareness of fencing today prepares us for the life skills needed in the future. We come by our name honestly.

Alexandre Dumas was a notable 19th century novelist whose recognized works include 'The Three Musketeers', 'The man in the iron mask' and 'The count of Monte Christo'. The history of fencing parallels the evolution of civilization, back from the days of ancient Egypt and Rome, to the barbaric Dark Ages, to the fast and elegant Renaissance, up to the modern, increasingly popular fencing of today. Fencing has always been regarded as more than a sport; it is an art form, an ancient symbol of power and glory, and a deeply personal, individual form of expression.

Fencing is and always has been an intrinsic part of life, from the dueling and battle of yore to the widely captivating movies and facets of popular culture such as Zorro and The Princess Bride.

The earliest evidence of fencing as a sport comes from a carving in Egypt. The Greek and Roman civilizations favored short swords and light spears, and taught their warriors in schools called ludi.

The Spanish school, under masters such as Narvaez and Thibault, became a complicated and mystical affair whose geometrical theories required much practice to master. Italian masters like Agrippa and Capo Ferro developed a more pragmatic school in the late 16th and early 17th centuries, introducing innovations such as linear fencing and the lunge (You-tube video).

Rapiers evolved from cut-and-thrust military swords, but were most popular amongst civilians who used it for self-defence and dueling.

Fencing first came to America in the 1860’s-1870’s via immigrant French and Italian fencing masters, and the first American fencing school was founded in 1874.

MISSION

The Alexandre Dumas Fencing Society is committed to the goals of the United States Fencing Association. These goals relate to the development of the athlete while training for either foil, épée or saber. Emphasis is placed on strategy as well as athletic performance. Hence, the reason why fencing has been dubbed "physical chess". We at ADFS are dedicated to the educational and technical development to learn the art of fencing. The special approach to personal training via the philosophy of the Fencing master enable all participants to grow (from the inside) at their own pace. Fencing, as a sport and art continues to promote positive values that motivate and instill confidence in children, teenagers and adults.
